World Space Week 2023 takes place from October 4th – October 7th.

If you are a teacher passionate about breathing as much life as possible into your STEM lessons, World Space Week is a great holiday to get on board. Spaceships, Astronauts, Alien Planets – what’s not to like?

Like you, we are passionate about getting your students excited about STEM, so below, we have listed 5 classroom-friendly World Space Week activities to take your lessons out of this world! (Pun 100% intended.)

1. InnovateHer Online – An interview with Jackie Bell!

Dr Jackie Bell is out of this world! She’s a particle physicist, mathematician, teacher and speaker – and more amazingly, on a journey to become an Astronaut!

In this Q&A, with InnovateHer’s very own Chelsea, Jackie explores topics such as resilience, her career, what it takes to become an astronaut and space!

2. NASA’s SpaceX Crew-5 Launch

Ok, let’s be honest, when it comes to all things space, it doesn’t get bigger than NASA.

NASA is hosting live coverage of the launch of four crew members aboard a Crew Dragon spacecraft on a Falcon 9 rocket to the International Space Station – and are inviting everyone to be there!

If this doesn’t get your classroom ready for lift-off, we don’t know what will.

3. Space Zone

Like us, UK Space Station-funded I’m in Space work with schools to link students to STEM professionals. From September to December, they are inviting schools to talk to a range of space professionals to gain a deeper understanding of space science. Show them the diverse range of roles in the UK space industry.

4. National Schools’ Observatory (NSO)

Sponsored by Liverpool John Moores University, the NSA is an initiative that allows teachers and students to request and download images from the Liverpool Telescope. It has been designed to simplify the process of scheduling observations on a robotic telescope so that users can request observations with just a few clicks of the mouse.

In short, this tool will allow you and your students an exciting session of exploring space through a real-life telescope!

5. Space Education Symposium

Ok, this one isn’t being hosted over Space Week, – but we thought it was too good not to feature on our list of World Space Week 2022 Activities for teachers.

Hosted virtually, This full-day conference-style event will change your perspective! Hosted by the Human Space Program, the symposium focuses on helping more people experience the Overview Effect, benefit from it here on Earth, and become engaged in preparing for humanity’s rapidly approaching multi-planet future.

Whether you dial in for half an hour or the whole day, this is an immersive event – perfect for inspiring young minds.
