Meet the Mentor – Urška Tičar

Meet Urška, a recent lead tutor on the InnovateHer ‘Tech For Good’ programme at Loreto High School.

Urška is a user researcher and designer who works for a company named Paper. Design is her way of learning, and she enjoys learning new things through the projects she is involved with.

How did you get to where you are today in your career?

My journey into becoming a digital professional came around naturally, I didn’t plan to work in digital world. I have a degree in Interior and Environmental Design but after working in the industry for a year and a half I wanted a new challenge. So, I went back to school and got a masters in Digital Experience Design at Hyper Island. That led me to work in the digital realm.

What skills do you think you need to do your line of work?

Creativity is key, as is the ability to use the tools you’ve learned throughout your life and apply them to digital product/services.

Describe your average day

No two days are the same in my work. My company is based in Sheffield and I live in Manchester. I travel to our studios, work from clients offices or from home (which means a home office or coffee shops, sometimes co-working spaces).

My day normally starts at 9:30 with “stand up” when we inform the rest of the team what have we done the previous day and what are we doing today. We also “Check-in”, informing the team how are we feeling today. Then it is either user research, meetings, clustering of insights with a lunch in between of course. At the end of the day (around 16:30) the team does a group “Check out” where we do a small reflection on our day before we leave the office.

Any advice for a young person who might want to do this as a career?

Working in digital is not just coding, because the field is always evolving, digital needs people with a diverse set of skills. Evolve your skillset and keep digital in mind, always question how your skills can apply to digital products/services.

Why did you want to become an InnovateHer mentor?

I was looking for new challenges and how I can evolve myself. I knew about InnovateHer before they came to Manchester, so when they branched out to Manchester it was an obvious decision to apply to become a mentor. It was a great experience and I have learned a lot in the process.
