To mark her milestone birthday, one of our future innovators, who recently read ‘I Am Malala’, shares why the activist is one of her role models:
July 12th is Malala Yousafzai’s birthday.
Malala is a girl from Pakistan who campaigns for peace and girls’ education. She was shot in the head on her way home from school one day in October 2012 for speaking out about what she thought about the Taliban and how a girl has a right to an education.
Malala had to spend many months in hospital in England recovering. After leaving hospital she created the Malala Fund which supports girls’ education around the world.
In recognition for her work, in 2014 she became the youngest person to win the Nobel Peace Prize. She now lives in Birmingham and is attending Oxford University.
I read her book, ‘I Am Malala’, in a book club I’m in and I really liked it. I think Malala is smart, powerful and brave. I can’t wait to see all the other things amazing things she does.
Happy birthday Malala! – Alice Toner, a girl geek
