In 2011 only 10% of wiki contributors were female and in 2018 only 17% of entries on the online encyclopedia were about women. It’s time we changed that together.
InnovateHer have teamed up with Open Data Manchester to organise a Wiki-edit-a-thon in July to address the diversity imbalance in Wikipedia entries.
During the edit-a-thon we’ll be working through a backlog of Wikipedia pages to help improve the coverage of women and diversity in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) on Wikipedia.
Anyone can participate! We’re looking for experienced editors and those without editing experience who are enthusiastic about writing, fact-checking and tackling the diversity deficit in STEM.
The event is completely free.
What is a Wiki-edit-a-thon?
You will be working with a group of like-minded individuals towards one goal – improving the coverage of women in STEM and diversity on Wikipedia. In groups (remotely or in person) you will edit, research and write a backlog of Wikipedia pages.
24th July 2019, 6:30pm – 8:30pm
Anyone aged 15 + with a STEM/editing background or anyone who wants to learn how to edit Wikipedia pages
What to bring:
We will provide refreshments, but we recommend you might want to grab something to eat beforehand. There is a co-op market just round the corner, or a number of small, local cafes and restaurants nearby.
Federation is located in the centre of Manchester, on the corner of Balloon Street and Federation Street. It’s about a minute walk from Shudehill tram and bus station, and few minutes from Victoria tram and train station. Putting the address into your phone or satnav should get you here.
Federation has no parking itself, but there are a number of carparks in the immediate area, such as the Manchester Arndale or Printworks NCP.
There is one step from the pavement to the entrance to the building. The door staff will be able to bring out a ramp for you if required. The rest of the building is an accessible venue with a lift to all floors.
