Meet Role Models: Advice from Women in Tech

Written by: on May 1, 2026

Welcome to Part 1 of our two-part series sharing advice from women in tech.

These role models have shared their thoughts and tips to provide guidance to young people considering careers in tech.

We asked a group of inspirational women in tech at BAE Systems Digital Intelligence what’s so great about a career in digital. This is what they told us.

The first question that we asked was, ‘What do you love about a career in digital?

Below are the responses from the different careers of women in tech:

  1. Jess

The digital world is part of everything we do – it’s integral to how modern society works. Once you understand digital foundations, you can step into almost any industry you can imagine and springboard your career in directions you may never have considered in the first place. I love working in digital for exactly that reason: it’s given me the freedom to work across data, cyber, space, and products, all built on digital foundations that have opened doors I didn’t even know existed.

2. Lauren

For me, the most rewarding part of working in digital is knowing that what we do genuinely matters. The work is fast-moving and constantly evolving, and there’s always something new to learn. I love the mix of creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork that goes into building solutions that have a real-world impact.

3. Mia

I love the breadth of places a career in digital can take you. Data and tech are used across all industries, so it doesn’t matter what your passion is; there is surely going to be a way for technology to help. I had no idea when I started studying computer science that the digital skills I was learning would someday lead me to attend a hackathon at Interpol, working to stop international crime.

4. Gwyneth

What I love most about a career in digital is the impact and the pace of change. You are constantly learning, evolving, and solving meaningful problems, with no two days ever the same. It sits at the intersection of people, technology, and innovation, and you can see the real-world impact of your work. I also value how accessible it is. Digital rewards curiosity and a willingness to learn, no matter your background.

5. Jo

All the clever people I work with and what an impact we have on the UK through the amazing things we design and build: protecting our citizens at the border, safeguarding vulnerable children online, and helping to stop serious organised crime.

6. Emma

The great thing about a career in digital is that there is no such thing as ‘business as usual’. I’m 10 years into my career now, and the way I do my job today is unrecognisable from how I would do the same thing in 2016. Working in digital means you are always getting exposure to new technological developments, just when you think you are on top of the new change, a new technology wave comes and gives you the opportunity to learn all over again.

7. Lorna

I love the ability to work on projects that have measurable impacts on the end user – a real person who is impacted by our changes. I have been working to help reduce the incidents of VAWG (violence against women and girls), and it has been so interesting focusing on how to improve cross-agency collaboration in this space. The most successful change programmes are those that identify upfront what they intend to change, how they are impacting the end user, in this case the victim’s experience and what mechanism is put in place to measure the change.

8. Jessica

The world we live in now is fundamentally underpinned by technology in nearly every facet. Understanding how technology works helps me make sense of an ever-more complex world. It also means I can see opportunities to make the lives of the people I care about easier.

My favourite thing about working in digital is having the opportunity to solve really difficult problems with some of the brightest people I’ve met. Facilitating experts to come up with something brilliant to solve our customers’ problems is the most satisfying and rewarding part of my role.

9. Gi-gi

As a cybersecurity consultant, I have to keep pace with a rapidly changing technology landscape and threat landscape, which means I’m always facing new and interesting challenges. I’ve worked with governments and critical national infrastructure operators, which, like all parts of society, are increasingly dependent on digital technologies – it’s so important to combat cyber threats to keep these organisations, and ultimately people, safe and well. I’ve also enjoyed working with so many friendly and inspiring colleagues in the industry.

10. Hannah

I love that it (digital) is constantly changing and evolving, which means constantly learning new things and challenging my thinking. It is such a broad domain that there is always something different to do, which keeps my very busy brain engaged. I love that digital impacts every area of our lives and world – personally, I work in Defence, and I love the fact that I can use my non-traditional Defence skillset to support an industry that is so vital to keeping us all safe and really matters.
